Knocking on doors, Opening stories
Every real estate agent knows that knocking on doors is part of the job. Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes it’s awkward, and once in a while, it’s unforgettable. I recently shared two of my most surprising experiences on YouTube, and they perfectly show the highs and lows of this unique part of real estate life.
A knock that turned into a smile
One day, I rang the doorbell and nervously introduced myself. Instead of shutting the door or brushing me off, the homeowner lit up with a big smile. She was kind, curious, and even laughed at my small slip when I said “need” instead of “real estate needs.”
That little moment of miscommunication actually broke the ice and reminded me that people respond best to authenticity, not perfection.
👉 Lesson learned: A smile and genuine energy go a long way in real estate (and in life).
When a knock brings the Police
Not every story ends with laughter. On another day, I knocked on a door where the homeowner clearly wasn’t comfortable. They didn’t know me, didn’t understand why I was there, and within minutes the police showed up to check if I was legit.
It was stressful in the moment, but also a huge learning experience.
Why these stories matter
Door-knocking is more than just prospecting. It’s about human connection, trust, and showing professionalism. These stories (one lighthearted, one intense) highlight three important truths for anyone in real estate:
-
Be authentic. People respond to real conversation, not rehearsed scripts.
-
Be prepared. Clear identification protects you and reassures homeowners.
-
Be reflective. Every encounter is a chance to learn and improve.
Final thoughts
Whether it’s a smile at the door or a visit from the police, every knock carries a lesson. As a French-American real estate broker in Scottsdale, I’ve learned that building trust in the community requires patience, professionalism, and sometimes even a sense of humor.
